When we make the decision to take “time off” from our smartphones, the internet, and social media, it’s a valuable opportunity to review the value they bring to our lives.
The old saying goes: “You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” The same is true here: “You never have an accurate understanding of how valuable certain activities are, until you cut them out.”
In this case, cutting an activity, like scrolling through social media, actually reveals how not valuable it can be. Most of our digital habits were built rather haphazardly. We scroll because it’s what we do. Not because we consciously perceive any value from it.
When we take a break, we come away with a better understanding of the value of our digital activities and we also have a chance to intentionally invest in our local face-to-face relationships.
