It’s a simple principle but when applied, it can have powerful results.

The distinction between disciplined digital technology use and undisciplined use is this: what brings us to the technology in the first place?

Is it a compulsive habit, driven by dopamine? Or is it an intentional action driven by my values and goals in life?

Digital tools like social media and the internet are just that–tools. They can be used to get us closer to our goals. But they can also become an obstacle to our goals if we can’t control our usage of them.

Mastering our selves, using discipline, relies on having clarity about what our values are. And then using those values to drive our use of these technologies.
