Earlier this year, during quarantine, I read Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport.
This book encouraged me and my wife Shannon to implement a 30-day “digital declutter”. We cut out as much digital technology as we realistically could for a month. We continued working online from home, kept up with family via video calls, and limited our time spent checking and sending texts. Other than that, we cut most everything else out.
Some of the digital habits we created during that month of decluttering linger with us.
The key question we were asking ourselves was this: how much of our time and attention is going to our digital technology? (Includes: smartphone, internet, social media, etc.)
If time is really a person’s most valuable asset, then we ought to be aware of where it’s being spent.
You don’t have to make all the same rules we did but I encourage you to honestly assess where your time is going and whether the digital world is taking an appropriate amount of time and attention.
